CBS is currently working on a spin-off series for the popular sitcom "The Big Bang Theory," which will be focusing on the childhood of theoretical physicist Sheldon Lee Cooper (Jim Parsons).

According to Variety, the prequel is expected to illustrate Sheldon's colorful childhood stories about growing up in Texas. To note, the spin-off will be set several years back; hence, a younger Sheldon might portray the character instead of Parsons, who has won four Primetime Emmy Awards for his role.

The news outlet also reported that Parsons will still be involved in the production for the spin-off series, most likely to teach the younger Sheldon all about his character's quirks, but also to act as the executive producer of the TV show. Furthermore, co-creator Bill Prady will reportedly have a role in this series as well as an executive producer for the show, along with Chuck Lorre and Steve Molaro.

Molaro has been tasked to write the script for Sheldon's childhood years. According to the news outlet, their project is close to sealing a script deal.

Meanwhile, there is still no word if the rest of the characters in "The Big Bang Theory" will be featured as well, The Hollywood Reporter noted. Since Laurie Metcalf portrays Sheldon's mother, Mary, she will most likely reprise her role in the spin-off. This year, the actress earned an Emmy nomination for her recurring role in the series.

Since the network has yet to confirm the renewal of "The Big Bang Theory," some are speculating that the spin-off series could be a replacement for the original show. In addition, the contracts of Kaley Cuoco (Penny) and Johnny Galecki (Leonard Hofstadter) will be expiring by the end of this season, and they have yet to be renewed.

Because the network has not given official announcements regarding the future of the show, fans should not be too quick to believe the latest speculations.

"The Big Bang Theory" season 10 airs on Thursdays at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.
