'The Blacklist' Finale Spoilers, Plot Recap: The Big Reveal – Red Isn't Liz's Father But Her 'Sin-Eater'
Before the Season 2 finale of "The Blacklist" aired on Thursday night on NBC, series star Megan Boone revealed that a major question will be answered.
"You'll find out a big reveal!" Boone, who plays FBI agent Liz Keen, told Billy Bush and Kit Hoover on Access Hollywood Live. "We're finally going to put some things to rest on the show," she added.
Boone had teased that she was not kidding. "It's really just so surprising – something big happens!"
The central question of "The Blacklist" was really who Raymond Reddington (James Spader) was to Liz, with many speculating that he could be her father after all. And yes, this question was answered in the finale, and more.
We already discovered during the season that Liz's mother was a KGB operative. In the final episode, we discovered that Liz's real name was Masha Rostova and, no, Red was not her father. He was only protecting her from herself, because the real truth was that Liz killed her own father when she was a toddler by shooting him when he and her mother were having a violent fight.
Earlier in the season, Liz was framed for the assassination of a U.S. senator, who was injected by a deadly virus by virologist Leo Andropov. Liz was also infected by the same virus and was on the run with Red's help.
Liz was captured and questioned but later escaped with Red.
F.B.I. chief Harold Cooper (Henry Lennix) discovered his alleged terminal disease was a hoax perpetrated by Attorney General Tom Connolly (Reed Birney), who was in cahoots with Cooper's oncologist, who falsified results and administered chemicals that provided the desired physical results from Cooper.
Andropov was killed by gunmen and Liz and Tom (Ryan Eggold) became intimate after witnessing the brutal murder.
When Liz confronted and questioned Connolly, demanding that he drop the charges against Cooper's wife and prosecute Karakurt, Connolly reminded Liz how deep his influence ran in the bureau. Liz then shot him dead. Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff) was made the new Director when Cooper was questioned for the murder of Connolly.
Red declared that he was a sin-eater earlier on, and Liz realized that Red was "her" sin-eater, in that he helped suppress her memories of her own "sin"—killing her father, in the hope that she would not end up like Red. But in the end, Liz became just like Red, one of the FBI's Most Wanted Fugitives, as their pictures were shown side by side. Liz and Red were on the run, en route to a place, we would probably discover when Season 3 starts.
