After more than seven years, Dr. George O'Malley from "Grey's Anatomy" is returning to Shondaland.

According to TVLine, T.R. Knight, who played O'Malley for five seasons in the long-running ABC medical drama, has been cast in a recurring role in the Shondaland crime mystery/drama "The Catch."

The actor will play an undisclosed role in the show's upcoming season 2. According to "The Catch" showrunner Allan Heinberg, Knight's character was tailor-made for him.

"Shonda [Rhimes], Betsy [Beers], and I are beyond excited to have T.R. back in the Shondaland family — and on 'The Catch' in a role the was created and written especially for him," Heinberg said.

"This has been a thrilling secret to keep!" Rhimes said in a statement. "One of my favorite family members is home!"

Knight also released a statement about his casting, writing: "Working with Shonda, Betsy, and Allan again fills me with immense joy. I am heartened to be returning to Shondaland and excited to work with this exceptional cast."

"The Catch," which debuted earlier this year, follows private investigator Alice Vaughan (Mireille Enos), who is trying to catch her fiancé Benjamin (Peter Krause), a world-class con man who vanished with all of her money.

Knight is most popular for playing the lovable O'Malley in the ongoing "Grey's Anatomy," a role that earned him an Emmy nod in 2007. O'Malley was one of the show's original characters and was famously in a relationship with Katherine Heigl's Izzie Stevens at one point.

Since exiting "Grey's," Knight has appeared in other TV shows, including "The Good Wife," "Law & Order: SVU," and "11.22.63." Knight will also be in the ABC series "When We Rise." Apart from his television work, the actor has appeared onstage. He was recently in "It's Only A Play" alongside Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick.

"The Catch" season 2 debuts at midseason and will air Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
