'The Crown' season 2 news: 'Downton Abbey' star Matthew Goode lands recurring role
A new male character will be joining the upcoming season of Netflix's Golden Globe-winning drama "The Crown."
Season 2 of "The Crown" is expected to introduce many new faces as they enter the world of Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy). One of the most notable personalities arriving this coming season is Antony Armstrong-Jones, also known as Lord Snowdon, a society photographer. "Downton Abbey" actor Matthew Goode has been tapped to play the character.
Aside from his Netflix stint, Goode will also be the lead star of WGN America's sci-fi pilot "Roadside Picnic." His previous TV credits include A&E's "Roots" reboot and CBS' "The Good Wife." His most recent films include "Allied," "The Imitation Game," "Match Point," and "Watchmen."
In real life, Lord Snowdon married the Queen's sister, Princess Margaret (Vanessa Kirby), after she failed to marry Group Captain Peter Townsend. The pair was married from 1960 until 1978 and had two children: David Armstrong-Jones, second Earl of Snowdon, and Lady Sarah Chatto. Lord Snowdon died peacefully at his home in early January at the age of 86.
Filming for season 2 is currently underway, and recent reports claim that producers are now looking ahead to season 3. It is believed that they have begun searching for new cast members to portray a different life stage of Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip (Matt Smith), Margaret, and the rest of the characters.
Created by Peter Morgan, "The Crown" follows her Royal Highness through the years, up until present time. The series will span six seasons, with the current cast scheduled to star for two seasons. A new actress will take Foy's role for season three up to five, which explores the years between the 70s and the 90s. The final season will eventually highlight the Queen's more recent years while also introducing new members of the royal family.
Netflix has yet to announce an official premiere date for "The Crown" season 2.
