'The Flash' season 3 return date, news, spoilers: Old love interests of Caitlin and Iris set to reappear

Caitlin's (Danielle Panabaker) husband and Iris' (Candice Patton) old boyfriend will be appearing when the show returns from winter break. Meanwhile, Barry (Grant Gustin) and the team will be going through a series of missions to prevent Iris' death.

Previously in "The Flash," Caitlin's husband, Ronnie Raymond (Robbie Amell), died when he destroyed the singularity that opened a portal to Earth 2. At the same time, Iris' old boyfriend, Eddie Thawne (Rick Cosnett), was sucked in by the singularity when he committed suicide to stop The Reverse Flash (Matt Letscher) from hunting Barry.

Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that Amell will be appearing when "The Flash" season 3 returns, although the circumstances of how he comes back are being kept under wraps.

Meanwhile, Cosnett himself announced on Twitter that he will be coming back to The CW series.

It is possible that the two will show up as doppelgangers from another Earth or that they will come back to life in the process of altering the future to save Iris from dying.

Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg shared that Barry and the rest of the team will have "a little bit of a road map" that they will have to follow in order to change Iris' future.

Kreisberg said, "In an upcoming episode, they learn a little bit more about the future and they now have a list of things they know will occur between now and May. Their operating principle is can they stop enough of these things to change time?"

"They've got a mission every week to see if they can change the future," the showrunner added.

Kreisberg refused to give hints if Barry will be successful in saving Iris from being killed by Savitar, but it will all depend on how the Scarlet Speedster and the rest of his team will carry out their missions to change the future.

"The Flash" season 3 returns on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 8 p.m. on The CW.
