'The Flash' season 3 spoilers: Different version of Flashpoint storyline confirmed
"The Flash" season 2 finale set the ball rolling with Barry's secret trip to the past. This was for the purpose of saving his mother from being killed. It did not take a crystal ball though to know that the series was setting up the upcoming season for a "Flashpoint" storyline, which is what the premiere episode of "The Flash" season 3 is entitled. This was confirmed conveniently by Grant Gustin early this week on Twitter.
The actor's tweet said, "FLASHPOINT. This is not drill."
He even got the go signal from the show's executive producer, Greg Berlanti, to announce the episode's title. Gustin, who plays the role of The Flash in the series, had only just finished going over the script for the first episode of the upcoming season and felt compelled to share the news.
For those who are not familiar with the comic book lore, "Flashpoint" was a story written by Geoff Johns and told over a series of five issues touching on the existence of an alternative world where nations hovered on the verge of an apocalyptic war, and neither Superman nor The Flash existed. Events had taken a different turn in this universe such that Aquaman and Wonder Woman were on opposite sides of a war and Batman was a vengeful Thomas Wayne seeking redress for the murder of his son, Bruce.
The deviation in the timeline was a consequence of Barry Allen going back in time to rescue his mother and avoid her murder by the villain Reverse-Flash. Trapped in the alternate universe without powers but being the only one who remembers the world before Flashpoint, Allen had to work to regain his powers so that he could find his way back in time and fix the results of what he did.
That, however, is what happened in the comic book version. Fans and viewers of "The Flash" can expect that the "Flashpoint" episode that will herald season 3 will have a different take to the story, as Gustin assured eagerly awaiting followers of the series.
"We're definitely doing this FP thing our own way... I've read Flashpoint, I've seen the amazing animated film. This will be its own thing," he said.
As to how different it will be shall be for all to see when "The Flash" season 3 comes back on Oct. 4.
