'The Good Wife' spin-off release date, spoilers news: Premiere to happen around spring 2017, Alicia Florrick to face with Diane Lockhart again?

Popular legal and political CBS drama "The Good Wife" had a successful seven-year run, and the recent confirmation about a spin-off series underway did not come as a surprise to fans.

Actresses Christine Baranski and Cush Jumbo will headline the new show, and they will reprise their roles as Alicia Florrick's (Julianna Margulies) co-workers Diane Lockhart and Lucca Quinn. According to TV Guide, the story picks up a year after the series finale's famous slap, and Alicia is out of the law firm. There is also a possibility of Alicia making a special appearance on the show since she is Lucca's good friend. 

Diana and Alicia's confrontation is undoubtedly one of the show's highlights, but will there be another face-off between the two powerhouse characters? During a recent CBS Studios-hosted press conference, executive producer Michelle King hinted that there might be a possibility of lead actress Margulies making a special appearance. "We might [see Alicia]," she told TV Line. "It's all being conceived right now." King also mentioned about familiar faces returning to the firm other than Diana and Lucca, but the EP stressed that Alicia will no longer be working in the firm. "It'll be fun to build [the company] anew," she added. "But also, the thinking is new characters."

Even before the filming wrapped up for the mothership series, co-executive producer Robert King admitted that he already approached Baranski for the spin-off. He explained that due to the veteran actress' excellent portrayal of her role, they wanted to hold on to her just in case the network greenlights the new show. "[Diane Lockhart] was one of those characters, other than Will Gardner, that really seemed to pull audiences in," he said. "There's a certain solidity to her and a certain sense that she commands a room , but also there's a sensitivity beneath it. So it was a no-brainer to bring her onto the spin-off."

The still-untitled upcoming spin-off series is slated to premiere sometime in Spring 2017 on CBS All Access.
