'The Inhumans' release date, news & update: 'Inhumans' Imax debut a 'quadruple win,' Disney boss says
Next year's huge "The Inhumans" debut on Imax theaters has been called a "quadruple win" that benefits Marvel, Imax, ABC Studios and ABC.
The recently announced Marvel TV series will be the first to premiere on the big screen, marking a major shift in how television shows are made and marketed in today's increasingly crowded television landscape.
"We think this is a quadruple win — a win for Imax, a win for Marvel, a win for ABC Studios and a win for ABC to launch a show in an innovative way and get attention," Disney-ABC Television Group president Ben Sherwood recently told The Hollywood Reporter.
Marvel and ABC announced the upcoming eight-episode series last week and revealed that the Marvel drama will launch in over 1,000 Imax theaters in 74 countries. The first two episodes will debut for two weeks in September 2017 before airing as part of ABC's fall lineup, where they will be followed by the six remaining episodes.
Apart from setting the stage for the premiere, the large-format film company is also a financing participant in "The Inhumans." In addition, the series will be filmed solely with Imax cameras.
The big-screen debut is expected to draw huge crowds, allowing ABC to turn the premiere into an event that transcends the TV screen.
"It looks like an interesting new way of breaking through clutter, various media options and platforms that people have," Henry Schafer, executive vice president at brand specialist Q Scores, told THR. "This is an innovative way of doing that," he added.
"The Inhumans" is neither a spin-off of ABC's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." nor a replacement for the planned "Inhumans" feature film in Marvel Studios' lineup. Rather, ABC Studios hopes that those who go to the theaters to see the "Inhumans" premiere will continue watching the series on the network and be drawn to "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." as well.
"The Inhumans" will debut in Imax theaters and on ABC in September 2017.
