"The Last Kingdom," a new TV drama-adventure series resembling the "Game of Thrones," will soon hit the TV screen.

Unlike "Game of Thrones," which is fantasy-driven, "The Last Kingdom" will feature a number of fictional characters intermingled with others from history, Deadline reports.

The new TV series is based on the novels that form part of "The Saxon Stories" written by Bernard Cornwell. News of the series being developed emerged earlier this year. In September Alexander Dreymon was reportedly cast as its lead actor.

The series is jointly produced by BBC America, BBC Two and Carnival Films. Shooting is about to commence in Hungary and in the U.K. Since Dreymon's casting, the production has gone on to hire a number of other actors such as Rutger Hauer, Emily Cox, Matthew Macfadyen and David Dawson.

In the series, Dreymon plays the role of Uhtred who is born a Saxon nobleman's son. The Vikings murdered his entire family and kidnapped him, raising him as a Viking. As a result, Uhtred's loyalties will be torn between the Vikings who have raised him and the people of his own country.

In the series, the Vikings have captured much of ninth century Britain and only the Kingdom of Wessex stands defiantly against them. This is the "last kingdom" that the title of the series refers to. The kingdom is ruled by Alfred the Great, played by Dawson.

Deadline notes that the series will be based on how King Alfred united the various parts of Britain. Interlinked with this is Uhtred's story on how he sought to reclaim his ancestral birthright and land.

The cast of the show has been sourced from eight countries in Europe.

Ben Stephenson from BBC notes that the series "will combine intrigue of the best fantasy stories but with the reality of fact."
