'The Last of Us' movie release date, news and updates: Director shares why film production can't move forward
Production of the film adaptation of Naughty Dog's action-survival horror game, "The Last of Us," had reportedly been at a standstill for almost two years now. The reason cited is the ongoing disagreements between Sony and game developer, Naughty Dog.
Recently, director for the film Sam Raimi confessed through an IGN interview that creative director Neil Druckmann also had some kind of disagreement with Sony on the creative direction of the film.
"I'm not trying to be political — Neil's plan for it is not the same as Sony's," the director shared. He also stressed that he doesn't really have the rights to the film, despite being part of the production, as he is only hired by Sony.
"Even though I'm one of the producers on it the way he set it up, he [Druckmann] sold his rights to Sony, Sony hired me as a producer by chance, and I can't get the rights free for him so I'm not in the driver's seat and I can't tell you what Sony and Neil together will decide on," Raimi said. "If they do move forward, I'd love to help them again."
As of now, it remains unclear if the film adaptation of "The Last of Us" should still push through. It had been two years since the announcement of the film had been made, but there are no updates as to its pre-production and its cast has not been officially reported yet.
Screen Gems, a subsidiary of Sony, however confirmed that Druckmann is hired to write the script for the film, but other than that, no other reports are known.
There are also rumors that Maisie Williams ("Game of Thrones") is eyed to play the young lead, Ellie. No confirmation was made about this speculation either.
The original "Last of Us" game follows Joel, Ellie's father-figure, who tries to navigate an infected, post-apocalyptic world.
