'The Last of Us Part 2' news, updates: fan theory reveals major storyline twist

Did Joel's fate push Ellie to take matters into her own hands? | Naughty Dog

After viewing the trailer for "The Last of Us: Part 2," fans of the action-adventure, survival video game already came up with a huge plot twist theory regarding Ellie and Joel's new quest.

In the trailer, fans learned that Ellie is now 19 years old and has managed to kill several men on her own. Then Joel appeared while Ellie was busy playing the guitar to ask her if she will really go through with her killing spree. The teenager coldly replied that she is willing to do it until the very last one dies in her hands. While the trailer did not reveal who those men are, it could be speculated that she might be referring to the members of the Fireflies rebel group.

Since Ellie faced all those men on her own, a fan of the original "The Last of Us" game posted a plot theory about the sequel on Reddit.

According to NerveOnYa, Joel might be dead at the start of the game. This could be the reason why Ellie will be very determined to avenge the death of her protector from the first game.

The Redditor noted that Joel specifically asked Ellie if she really wants to go through with her revenge instead of asking her if they should really go through with it. The game's creative director Neil Druckmann also stated that the sequel will be played based on Ellie's perspective. This could mean something since Joel was the one who was doing all the action back in the first game.

If Joel will really die in "The Last of Us: Part 2," the Redditor claimed that this will be a big turning point for Ellie. "She breaks. The reality of what Joel did comes crashing back to her," the Reddit user wrote. "He blew her chance of saving the human race, of finding peace, so that they could be together. And now he's left her. She is going to go out, and kill 'Every. Single. One' of the people that killed Joel, not caring if she dies."

Naughty Dog has yet to confirm if there is a basis to the fan's theory.
