'The Leftovers' season 3 news: Latest trailer reveals April 2017 premiere for HBO drama
HBO's acclaimed post-apocalyptic drama "The Leftovers" concludes this year, and a new trailer for the final season has been released.
The latest trailer hints that the day of reckoning is fast approaching, with most of the main characters looking up to the sky. The next scene reveals they are actually looking at an aircraft penning a sign in the sky using contrails with the words: "The end is near." Aside from the ominous tone of the footage, it also features the return of cast members Carrie Coon, Scott Glenn, Amy Brenneman, and Christopher Eccleston, along with Jasmine Savoy Brown and Kevin Carroll who both joined the show in season 2. Playing to the backdrop of Beach Boys' "Don't Worry Baby," the video's end card confirms the show's April 2017 release date.
Season 3 will explore Kevin's (Justin Theroux) reunion with his unstable father, Kevin Sr. (Scott Glenn). The storyline includes a journey to Australia, which keeps true to the second season's repeated references to the area. Kevin previously heard that his father was planning to move to the country, so he communicated with him while in limbo. It was later revealed that he decided to live there for good.
Back in December, writer/showrunner Damon Lindelof explained the decision to move the show to another new setting. "Australia is the end of the world geographically and our show is about the end-of-the-world emotionally," he said. "And there's also something about Australian cinema — it's primal, ancient and spiritual — that felt like it fit 'The Leftovers,' whether it's 'Mad Max' movies or 'Walkabout,' or 'Waking Fright' or Peter Weir movies," he added.
"The Leftovers" centers on the aftermath of a fictional phenomenon that makes 2 percent of the world's population mysteriously disappear. Originally set in New York, Lindelof moved the series to Texas in season 2. The characters relocated to Jarden, a Texan town renamed "Miracle" because it's the only town that wasn't affected by the event.
The third season of "The Leftovers" premieres Sunday, April 16 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
