Many fans of "The Legend of Zelda for Wii U" expressed disappointment last March when Nintendo announced that the game would not be released this year. The Japanese game giant did not provide a specific date for its release.

Recently, when the company released its earnings report, it labeled the game's release as "TBD" or "to be decided."

Listing "The Legend of Zelda for Wii U" as TBD doesn't mean the game is in trouble, only that the developer is not yet ready to commit to a release window.

The release dates of other Nintendo games were revealed in the earnings report. Conspicuously missing was "The Legend of Zelda for Wii U."

It was first announced that the game would be launched at the end of this year. Eiji Aonuma, the series producer, even mentioned during the Game Awards last December that "The Legend of Zelda for Wii U" would be released later this year.

However, last March, Aonuma officially announced via Nintendo social media network that the game would not be released this year.

Despite the announcement, many fans still hoped the game would finally arrive in 2016.

But with the new "TBD" tag attached to the game, this means its release date could be pushed either to the end of next year or 2017.

In his post, Aonuma said Nintendo needs more time to complete the game since it wanted to make it the "best game it can possibly be." He said the company is focused on exceeding its expectations for the game.

Nintendo reportedly discovered "several new possibilities" for the game, prompting the delay in its release.

Industry insiders said the game is not actually bogged down in problems but is being fashioned to be a true open world game like many others in the market.

Previous releases in the gaming franchise such as "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" almost always presented gamers with a loading screen and they had to find their way back to the Hyrule Field hub in order to get to the next location.

It is widely expected that "The Legend of Zelda for Wii U" will not have this limitation and others such as obstacles that limited entry to certain areas as seen in "The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Walker."
