'The Little Mermaid' news: Lin-Manuel Miranda, Alan Menken to make music for live-action film
Lin-Manuel Miranda, who recently rose to superstardom after creating and starring in the Broadway phenomenon "Hamilton," is taking on a dream project: Disney's upcoming live-action version of the classic animated film "The Little Mermaid."
Miranda will team up with legendary composer Alan Menken, who has made the music for many beloved Disney films, for the upcoming live action feature, Deadline has learned.
In May, Deadline reported that Disney is planning on adding the iconic mermaid tale to its lineup of projects based on beloved animated films. According to the outlet, the upcoming "The Little Mermaid" adaptation will feature a some of the classic songs from the 1989 Disney animated film.
Menken won two Academy Awards for his work on "The Little Mermaid" — one for Best Song (shared with Howard Ashman) and another for Best Score.
Apart from working on the tunes for "The Little Mermaid," Miranda is also reportedly producing the film alongside Marc Platt.
The actor/composer/rapper is said to have a soft spot for the classic mermaid film. According to Deadline, Miranda even named his son Sebastian after the lovable crab in the tale.
In December 2015, he told Entertainment Weekly that "The Little Mermaid" is "the movie that's probably most responsible for me being here."
"I started taping the Oscars because I wanted to see Geoffrey Holder's performance of 'Under the Sea,'" he said. "That was the beginning of the end. Or, the beginning of the beginning, depending on how you look at it... I could sing you not only the songs in 'Little Mermaid' but the music to the score. That's how important those scores are in my life and in my upbringing."
According to Deadline, the level of Miranda's involvement in the upcoming live-action film is still being determined. While he will be supervising the story, he isn't writing the script. Disney will reportedly be hiring a writer for the film.
"The Little Mermaid" is the latest collaboration between Miranda and Disney. The Tony- and Grammy-winner was recently attached to play a new character, Jack, in the upcoming "Mary Poppins Returns" (2018). He also worked on the music for the next big Disney animated film "Moana" (2016).
Disney has not announced the official release date for "The Little Mermaid."
