After a successful sophomore run, "The Man in the High Castle" has been recently renewed for a third season on Amazon.

According to reports, Amazon announced the program's renewal less than a month after the premiere of season 2. Although major streaming platforms are notorious for never releasing ratings, Amazon claims that the alternative history drama's second season had the best debut weekend than any of its scripted shows ever.

The series went through a major behind-the-scenes shake-up last year when Frank Spotnitz abruptly stepped down as showrunner. His exit happened midway through production for season 2, forcing everyone in the dystopian thriller to operate without a single boss. Executive David Zucker explained during the 2016 TCA summer press tour that they had to work like a "republic" to complete the series.

For season 3, things will be a bit different because "Bosch" executive producer Eric Overmyer will not assume the top post as showrunner. He was previously an executive producer for Showtime's "The Affair," and he also served as co-creator for HBO's Peabody Award-winning drama "Treme."

"As timely as ever, the exploration of characters at a dark point for humanity has provided incredible stories for two seasons," said Joe Lewis, Amazon Studios comedy and drama chief. "Eric and his team are doing an incredible job crafting stories about the inner lives of those who struggle to do good in a world that is not. We couldn't be more excited to bring Season 3 to customers in 2017," he added.

Based on Dick's 1962 novel of the same name, "The Man in the High Castle" explores an alternate timeline wherein Germany has control over the former United States' East Coast while Japan rules over the West Coast. The Roky Mountains are considered as a neutral zone, and it also serves as the American resistance's ground zero. The resistance is led by a mysterious figure who is only known as the Man in the High Castle.

The first two seasons of "The Man in the High Castle" are currently available for streaming via Amazon Prime.
