'The Punisher' release date: Spinoff production begins; 'Punisher: War Zone' as source material?
Filming for "The Punisher" spinoff has begun with lead actor Jon Bernthal pictured in Brooklyn in some set photos for fans to check out as they wait for his return to the small screen.
Bernthal donned an all-black attire but sported a beard and a bushy head of hair, which sparked rumors that the series, or at least what he is currently filming, will be based on the "Punisher: War Zone" storyline.
"The Punisher" series could be adapting 2012 comic book story by Greg Rucka, Carmine Di Giandomenico, Matt Hollingsworth, and Joe Caramagna, where Frank Castle sported such look and at some point included Daredevil to the mix.
At the moment, there is no information yet about the Netflix series other than Bernthal's return as the titular character and Ben Barnes taking on the role of the baddie presumably the mob boss Bobby Saint.
No other casting news involving "The Punisher" has come out yet after that, which comes as a bit of a surprise that the filming is already underway.
Bernthal will no longer be present in the entirety of the New York Comic-Con (NYCC) due to conflict in schedule with Netflix, which suggested that filming is indeed underway.
The filming with little information only out also makes it difficult to figure out what stories will be tackled in "The Punisher" series.
However, it appears that Daredevil and other established Marvel characters in Netflix's universe could be involved at some point in his standalone outing including Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio).
D'Onofrio has hinted in the past that he could pop by "The Punisher" spinoff considering his character's involvement with Punisher comic book stories.
Meanwhile, "The Punisher" spinoff is reportedly under the working title "Crime," according to Comicbook.com. There is no more information to elaborate on that.
The series is expected to premiere sometime in 2017. More details are expected to be revealed at the NYCC this week.
