Guillermo del Toro has his own unique way of making films. Many of his films tend to mix the real world with a fantastical one, and it looks like fans can expect "The Shape of Water" to share similar elements found in his previous films like "Pan's Labyrinth" and "The Devil's Backbone." Both films were set against the backdrop of actual historical events, and del Toro's new project would be as well.

In an interview with Collider, actor Doug Jones shared a lot of details about his character and the plot of the film. Interestingly, his character was a fish man and he was also the last of his species. Jones revealed that nobody knows where his character came from, so while the space race was heating up between two Cold War rivals, the U.S. government was also busy studying him in 1963.

"I'm being tested for how can they use me for advantages in military or space travel, or my technology — can we make this usable for humans? So they're trying to keep me a secret from the Russians," he stated.

Jones also revealed that "The Shape of Water" would also contain a love story. "Meanwhile, there's a love story that brews out of it, and that would be the cleaning lady played by Sally Hawkins. She comes and finds me, has sympathy on me, and then that's the story that you're really gonna follow with this whole backdrop," he said.

A long-time del Toro collaborator, Jones believed that "The Shape of Water" would put the director back in Oscar contention, and he said he would be very surprised if it does not get nominated.

Besides Jones, the film will also star Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg, Octavia Spencer, and Nick Searcy. Sources believe the film will come out sometime this year.
