'The Walking Dead' season 7 release date, spoilers news: Did Jeffrey Dean Morgan reveal who Negan didn't kill in season 6 finale?

Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays Negan, the new main villain in AMC's "The Walking Dead," may have just dropped a major hint about the identity of the person his character killed in the show's controversial season 6 finale.

The identity of Negan's mystery season 6 victim is one of the most highly anticipated reveals on television this year. In the season 6 finale, Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the group of zombie apocalypse survivors he leads were all on their knees in front of Negan. The villain, meanwhile, was choosing which one of the Alexandrians would be his first victim. The whole thing was intended to teach Rick a lesson and to show him and his group who has the power in the show's new world order.

But just as Negan had made his choice and swung his bat, the season 6 finale cut to black, leaving fans with a major clliffhanger. Since then, various theories about Negan's victim have popped up and many have tried to spoil the season 7 premiere reveal for viewers of the show.

But the latest spoiler may have come from Negan himself.

In a recent interview for IMDb at last week's Comic-Con, filmmaker Kevin Smith chatted with Morgan, Lincoln, Steven Yeun (Glenn), and Norman Reedus (Daryl).

Smith addressed the "TWD" stars on the stage, asking, "With the exception of Jeffrey, the rest of this panel is unkillable, right? Not a single one is ever leaving that show?"

Prompted by Reedus and Lincoln, who were telling him to reveal who Negan killed in season 6, Morgan eventually offered an answer, saying, "No one sitting here."

Meanwhile, in an interview with ComicBook.com, "The Walking Dead" executive producer Greg Nicotero spoke about the "TWD" team's approach to selecting Negan's victim and to picking up from the season 6 finale.

"I think that is the trickiest aspect of the first episode is living up to, number one, the expectation of that moment and then, what's even more interesting for me as a director of the episode, is how that changes the direction of the survivors forever," he said.

While he didn't spill the beans on the Negan victim, Nicotero revealed that he needed to keep the audience engaged and staying faithful to the source material wouldn't necessarily accomplish that.

"...everybody knows it's coming so it's agonizing to think about the fact that we're changing the landscape of our characters," he said.

"The Walking Dead" season 7 debuts Sunday, Oct. 23, at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
