'This Is Us' spoilers: Are wedding bells next for Toby and Kate?

Just as promised, "This Is Us" did not dance around Toby's (Chris Sullivan) fate after his heart-stopping catastrophe during the midseason finale. But while Kate's (Chrissy Metz) on-again beau may need a bit of time to settle down after going on the table not once but twice, he seems to be forging ahead with an impromptu proposal that may or may not lead the two of them to the altar.

In the winter premiere of this season's hottest debut show, Toby did not only survive his predicament but he also underwent another surgery to address his clogged veins problem. And even before he was wheeled out of the room for his preventive operation, he proposed quite romantically to Kate which she belatedly said yes to. Given where the two currently stands, will the next few episodes see wedding planning for the two? It seems not, but they do acknowledge the couple will not just brush past their whirlwind engagement.

"As we move forward into the next few episodes, yes, they are calling each other fiancé by the time we return to them, but there's something underneath their relationship which is slightly unsettling but still in a charmed way," series creator Dan Fogelman told Entertainment Weekly in an episodic post-mortem session. "They're both going through this relationship of extremes together, where they're up and down, and Kate is making a lot of big life decisions and going through in subsequent episodes a lot of stuff at her core and a lot of heavy-duty, emotional, therapeutic-type stuff," he added.

Unfortunately, given that "This Is Us" does not shy away from the harsh realities of life, the TV exec warns that this impromptu decision may eventually bite back Toby and Kate.

"They act before thinking, and they act before analyzing, and that has both charming and positive consequences but then also can lead to problems. So I think you're meant to feel a little easy about the proposal in terms of the very question you're asking: 'Are they really engaged?' [It's] something we return to many times in the upcoming episodes," he went on to say.

It can be remembered that before Kevin followed Kate in Randall's home to celebrate Christmas dinner, the two had a tumultuous past couple of weeks to the point that Kate eventually broke up with her boyfriend. But the two eventually sorted things out leading to them deciding to get into a speedy engagement.

"This Is Us" airs every Tuesday, 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
