'Thor: Ragnarok' release date, plot spoilers: Director on 'most different' MCU film, casting Tessa Thompson in originally white role
"Thor: Ragnarok," the upcoming third "Thor" stand-alone, will be one of the biggest and "most different" Marvel Cinematic Universe films yet.
In an interview with Polygon, "Ragnarok" director Taika Waititi spoke about making the jump from his usual indie fare to the next "Thor," a big-budget ensemble film.
"I think this is the most different Marvel movie to date and one of the biggest," he said, adding that while he felt like a guest in the MCU, he was given the creative freedom to do what he wanted with the film. He also said that Marvel President Kevin Feige, an executive producer on "Ragnarok," had a hands-off approach to the project, which allowed him to execute his ideas for the film.
Waititi, who also helmed this year's "Hunt for the Wilderpeople," also said that "Ragnarok" will feature "buddy elements" between Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), the two Avengers who were absent in "Captain America: Civil War" (2016).
However, the director told Polygon that it's hard to predict what the overall tone of the movie will be. "It's hard to say what the movie is because it's changing," he said.
Meanwhile, in an interview with Spinoff, Waititi talked about casting new "Thor" addition Tessa Thompson. The actress will be playing Valkyrie, Thor's new love interest. According to the director, the decision to cast Thompson as a character who is originally depicted as white was a move towards being more inclusive.
"You want to be more inclusive and provide a broader representation," he said. "And at that point, you have to look at the source material as a very loose inspiration. And then take it from there and go with your gut."
"I think the story is king, and you want the best person for the job," Waititi added. "And Tessa tested against — we cast a very broad net, and Tess was the best person."
"Thor: Ragnarok" is scheduled for release on Nov. 3, 2017.
