'Tokyo Ghoul' season 3 release date: No 2017 launch for series
"Tokyo Ghoul" season 3 might not be coming this year after all. Funimation has recently announced its fall lineup with 18 shows in total and the anime is not included.
Last year, Funimation chief executive officer and president Gen Fukunaga stated that the new season will premiere this year. However, this might not transpire anymore.
There has not been any news about "Tokyo Ghoul" season 3 since the second season ended early last year. Some reports suggest that it will no longer return to the small screen because of the backlash about the second season.
The first season of "Tokyo Ghoul" followed the manga by Sui Ishida fairly loyally. The second one completely moved away from the source material, which drew the ire of manga fans.
There is no solid information specifically about "Tokyo Ghoul" season 3, but if the series is still coming back, an early 2017 launch is highly likely, where a new schedule of programming with the next batch of shows will premiere.
"Tokyo Ghoul" season 2 ended with a cliffhanger, which saw the life of protagonist Ken Kaneki hanging by a thread after an encounter with a villain named Akima.
It was made to show that Ken lost and was killed during the battle, but fans of the manga know that death does not end the story of the character.
It remains a mystery if "Tokyo Ghoul" season 3 will continue to stray from the manga or once again adapt it and give fans what they want to see.
The situation is difficult to predict since the second season opened a mystery that is begging to be answered in "Tokyo Ghoul" season 3.
At the moment, it appears that fans will have to be patient to see what the future has in store for the manga adaptation.
