'Tomb Raider' release date, cast news, plot updates: Film to feature a more modern take on Lara Croft's story
The "Tomb Raider" reboot is slated for a 2018 debut, featuring a more modern timeline of Lara Croft's career as compared to the previous films of the franchise.
Films of the "Tomb Raider" franchise first came out in 2001 and 2003, featuring Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft in the titles "Lara Croft: The Tomb Raider" and "Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life." Now that the franchise will have a film reboot, the story is said to have a fresh take on the story of Lara Croft, according to Cinema Blend.
Rich Briggs, brand director for Crystal Dynamics, the developing studio that created the "Tomb Raider" games, shared that the reboot will feature "the modern survival-action origin story timeline as opposed to the classic Lara Croft."
Briggs is referring to the 2013 version of the "Tomb Raider" action-survival game, where a younger Lara Croft has only just begun in her archaeology career and where she is trying to survive with whatever resources she can find after being cut off from getting financial support.
The actress tagged to portray the young career hungry Lara Croft is the "The Danish Girl" Oscar-winning actress Alicia Vikander, according to Variety.
Briggs assures fans of "Tomb Raider" that director Roar Uthaug and Vikander are taking the film with an approach that will serve "a new type of 'Tomb Raider' movie, one that does take place within the modern timeline."
Meanwhile, the actor who will play as the antagonist opposite Vikander is Walton Goggins. But details about who he will play in the "Tomb Raider" reboot have yet to be revealed.
The production for "Tomb Raider" will begin early next year, Screenrant has confirmed from My Entertainment World. Locations for filming include the UK and South Africa, and it is anticipated that Lara Croft will visit these places in search for her missing father.
"Tomb Raider" is expected to premiere on March 16, 2018.
