'Tomb Raider' release date, latest news: Daniel Wu joins cast of 'Tomb Raider' film reboot
"Into the Badlands" star Daniel Wu will be joining the cast of upcoming movie reboot of the popular video game franchise "Tomb Raider," which has chosen Academy Award-winner Alicia Vikander as the iconic game character Lara Croft.
According to Variety, the actor will portray the role of Lu Ren, a ship captain who will be working closely with Croft on her quest to locate her father.
Aside from Vikander, Wu will be joining the cast along with Emmy-nominated actor Walton Goggins, who will be playing the upcoming film's main villain.
The first "Tomb Raider" game was published back in 1996 by the London-based video game company Eidos, and it turned out to be one of the most successful games in its time. In 2013, a reboot of the series, which told the origins of Lara Croft, was launched, and that ended up selling over 5 million copies. A sequel game, titled "Rise of the Tomb Raider," is currently available and is met with critical acclaim.
In the past, Paramount Pictures released two "Tomb Raider" films which starred Angelina Jolie as the wealthy and lethal British archaeologist. The first film was released back in 2001, and the second movie was launched in 2003. Both movies earned a combined amount of $431 million worldwide, proving to be commercially successful at the time.
As reported by Comicbook, the upcoming "Tomb Raider" film is written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, the same writer for movies such as "ROM," "Sherlock Holmes 3," and "Gotham City Sirens." The movie will be under the direction of Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthag, who also worked on the movie "The Wave."
Warner Bros. will be co-producing the film with MGM and GK Films. Warner Bros. and MGM will also be distributing the movie.
The upcoming "Tomb Raider" reboot movie is scheduled to commence filming next month, and it is slated to arrive in theaters on March 16, 2018.
