'Transparent' season 3 news: Cast previews Maura's future after finding out she can't have gender-reassignment surgery
In the critically acclaimed "Transparent" season 3, the members of the Pfefferman family struggled with various issues as their trans parent Maura (Jeffrey Tambor) prepared to undergo gender reassignment surgery.
Siblings Sarah (Amy Landecker), Josh (Jay Duplass), and Ali (Gaby Hoffmann), with their mother Shelly (Judith Light) went through crises of identity, love, death and faith. They ended the season on a more-or-less peaceful note on a cruise ship. However, Maura found that due to her health issues, gender-reassignment surgery was out of the question.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Landecker spoke about where the comedy will go now that a wrench has been thrown in Maura's plans. According to the "Transparent" actress, in the show's fourth season, they will be dealing with Maura's new predicament. This reflects the real-life issues that the people behind the show are also dealing with.
"It's interesting," Landecker said. "Maura this season goes into super femme mode with the hair and the clothes, and then at the end of the season, she kind of finds this genderqueer place," she added.
The actress added that "Transparent" is a very realistic show, as it is inspired and based on the real-life experiences of creator Jill Soloway. Soloway has a trans parent undergoing transition. "We're dealing with issues that the actors and writers are dealing with as we're going along, so we'll have to see," she said.
Speaking with Vulture, Duplass explained how Maura's desire for surgery will affect the Pfefferman siblings.
According to the actor, for the siblings, the most terrifying part about their parent's transition is that it is a permanent change, one that will force them to change as well.
"We'll be reckoning with more change, because the show is all about when one person transitions, everyone else is forced to transition," he said. "If you're going to be in a relationship with them, if you're going to be true, it's going to affect you too," he added.
"Transparent" season 3 is now streaming on Amazon. The official release date for season 4 has yet to be announced.
