Fans of HBO's previous TV series "True Detective" may be happy to know that they're not the only ones unable to move on from the riveting show. Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey himself admitted that he is open to the possibility of returning to the show should there be a third season.

As reported by Entertainment Weekly, McConaughey appeared on "The Rich Eisen Show" on Dec. 16, Friday, to speak about Texas football, his newest animated film "Sing," and his enduring attachment to his "True Detective" role, Rustin "Rust" Cohle.

"You essentially said you wanted to play Rust Cohle when you saw the script," Eisen told the actor. "You were originally going to go for the part of Marty (Woody Harrelson's character) and then you were like, 'This guy Rustin Cohle really speaks to me,'" he went on to say.

"Can't wait to hear what comes out of his mouth," McConaughey said in agreement.

Eisen then mentioned a previous conversation he had with McConaughey, in which the actor had expressed his interest to reprise the role of Cohle in "True Detective" if an opportunity should arise.

"If that thing was written well and it came up again, I wouldn't hesitate for a second," McConaughey admitted, adding, "Oh, I'm open to it for sure."

According to BGR, the first season of "True Detective" was one of the most compelling and thrilling shows to have aired in recent years. It featured an intriguing story line which took place in the backwoods of Louisiana, and it was effectively brought to life by the stellar performances by McConaughey and his co-star, Woody Harrelson.

However, the show's second season, featuring a different cast, was not as successful in capturing the hearts of the audience. Given the performance of this particular season, the possibility for a "True Detective" season 3 remains to be seen.

As mentioned by McConaughey himself during his appearance in Eisen's show, it looks like series writer Nic Pizzolatto decided to take a little break from "True Detective," and the ball for the development of season 3 has not advanced at all.
