'True Detective' Season 2 Release Date, Cast Spoilers: 3 Law Enforcers and Career Criminal Caught in Web of Conspiracy
The first trailer for Season 2 of "True Detective" has been released by HBO and the 60-second clip gives viewers a first look at Collin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch in action.
According to HBO, in Season 2, "a bizarre murder brings together three law-enforcement officers and a career criminal, each of whom must navigate a web of conspiracy and betrayal in the scorched landscapes of California."
Colin Farrell is Ray Velcoro, a compromised detective in the all-industrial City of Vinci, LA County. Vince Vaughn plays Frank Semyon, a criminal and entrepreneur in danger of losing his life's work, while his wife and closest ally (Kelly Reilly), struggles with his choices and her own.
Rachel McAdams is Ani Bezzerides, a Ventura County Sheriff's detective often at odds with the system she serves, while Taylor Kitsch plays Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran and motorcycle cop for the California Highway Patrol who "discovers a crime scene which triggers an investigation involving three law enforcement groups, multiple criminal collusions, and billions of dollars."
Although not much can really be gleaned from the trailer, as it was mostly mood shots and selected scenes, with no dialogues, showing the four main stars, it was interesting to note that the four main stars are more known for their movie work than TV.
It is becoming a trend of sorts for artists wanting a change or a jumpstart to venture into the small screen, if only for a season. Matthew McConaughey was established as one of the most bankable dramatic stars in Hollywood, in large part because of the Oscar from "Dallas Buyers' Club" but also because of the buzz created from "True Detective."
Same is true for Woody Harrelson and Michelle Monaghan, who earned serious credits from the show. It also happened to Claire Danes in "Homeland," and it seems the four stars from "True Detective 2" are hoping for the same kind of magic.
McAdams is shedding her romantic girl-next door image with a shorter, almost unflattering hairdo, garbed in police wear and equipment. Kitsch is freshly shaven, looking very different from his doomed role as John Carter. Farrell is looking different with a moustache. And Vaughn is not sporting his usual comedy expressions.
Whatever the reasons they have for doing this series, one thing is for sure, their careers will take on a different direction, depending on how the series does, and how they perform all throughout.
Season 2 of "True Detective" is written and created by Nic Pizzolatto and will debut on HBO on June 21.
