'True Detective' season 3 renewal update: HBO promises anthology will be back, but with big changes
"True Detective" season 3 could still happen, but creator Nic Pizzolato, who wrote the first and second season, may not be on the writing duties.
The show's HBO recently addressed the questions of whether or not the crime anthology will ever return. It turns out that the network has been planning the show's return as well.
HBO head of programming Casey Bloys revealed during the Television Critics Association (TCA) summer press that "True Detective" is "not dead" and that he talked with Nic and HBO who were both willing to do a third season.
"It's a really valuable franchise for us. I think both seasons average about 11 million viewers an episode. So not dead. Just I'm not sure we have the right take for a third season yet," Bloys said via The Wrap.
He also emphasized that they are looking to hire a new writer for "True Detective" season 3 instead as Pizzolato is busy with other projects.
The writer signed an overall deal with HBO up to 2018, so it appears that he might be working on other projects for the network.
Taking this into account, Bloys said that Pizzolato will instead supervise the new writer that comes in. At the moment, there appears to be no person yet chosen for the role.
With regards to when "True Detective" season 3 will actually happen, it appears that it will be a long wait with much about the show's return not set in stone yet.
It has been a year since "True Detective" was on the small screen. In August last year, the second season ended with an underwhelming response from fans.
HBO has not talked about the show and its fate in the midst of the talks about the season, but former programming head Michael Lombardo took the blame, stating that he rushed Pizzolato to churn out a script.
