'Tyrant' season 4 canceled or renewed news 2016: 'Tyrant' ends with season 3 finale; could be picked up by streaming service

"Tyrant" has ended after three seasons.

The family drama/political thriller bowed with its season 3 finale, titled "Two Graves," on Wednesday, Sept. 7, just over two years after it premiered on FX.

"The creators of 'Tyrant' have done their utmost over three seasons to tell American audiences a tiny fraction of the many gripping, human stories coursing through the Middle East today," FX CEO John Landgraf said in a statement. Landgraf expressed gratitude to executive producers Howard Gordon and Chris Keyser, as well as their collaborators, including the show's directors, writers, cast and crew. The FX boss also thanked Fox 21 Television Studios, FX's production partner for "Tyrant," for the dedication and respect it gave the show.

While the people behind "Tyrant" said they had hoped that the series would go on, possibly in a new home, they also said that the season 3 finale served as an appropriate conclusion to the drama series.

"We feel the show is a gem and we'd love to find a way to keep it in production," Fox 21 Television Studios President Bert Salke said in a statement. "That said, we want to be realistic about its prospects," he added.

Salke continued that "Two Graves" was a "satisfying end" to "Tyrant" that also offered "interesting possibilities" should the series be picked up by another network or streaming service.

In an interview with Deadline, Gordon said he doesn't know if "Tyrant" is moving to a new home but that they had begun talking about the possibility of the series having a future beyond season 3.

Gordon also admitted that there is a chance that the series could land itself at a streaming service, like what happened to "The Mindy Project," which was picked up by Hulu after being dropped by Fox.

"Hulu, Amazon or Netflix would be terrific places for the show," Gordon said. "That's probably the most likely option if there is another chance," he added.

There is currently no official word about a possible "Tyrant" season 4.
