'Vampire Diaries' season 8 release date and rumors: Nina Dobrev to return?
The premiere date for "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 is getting closer and closer, and rumors are popping up that Nina Dobrev, who played Elena Gilbert on the show, will be making a comeback this season.
Reports are saying that Dobrev is currently in talks to make a return to "The Vampire Diaries," and fans are speculating on the impact of Elena's character on her former lover, Damon (Ian Somerhalder). Somerhalder himself told TV Line that he wasn't interested in Damon rekindling any kind of romance with Elena.
He said, "This poor young girl from this tiny town ... she lost everyone she's ever loved, she burned her house down, she's now in a box... These guys have ruined her life, yet everybody wants her to end up with one of them."
As for the return of Dobrev, there are already rumors online trying to point out her replacement just in case the talks of her return don't push through. The top candidates for Dobrev's replacements have been pointed to Victoria Justice and "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart.
With Stewart's reputation of helping launch the entire vampire teen romance genre, her appearance on the show may very well pull in some new viewers. Even if she doesn't end up taking the role of Elena, rumors already suggest that showrunner Julie Plec as well as The CW has plans to give Stewart a guest-starring role in a few episodes.
As for the choice to cast Justice in Dobrev's role, Justice actually found it humorous that Hollywood considers the two to be look-alikes. She said to Us Weekly, "I've never really had a doppelgänger in my life, so this is like my first experience with this thing... I thought that was hilarious the fact [US Weekly] put a picture of me thinking it was her."
Will Dobrev return, or will she be replaced by either Stewart or Justice?
"The Vampire Diaries" season 8 airs on Thursday, Oct. 21, at 8 p.m. EDT, on The CW.
