'Veep' season 6 spoilers news: Reason why Selina Meyer had to lose her presidential bid
The fifth season of HBO's "Veep" saw Selina Meyer losing her bid for the presidency and her assumed successor, Tom James, losing to Laura Montez. Laura crushed Selina's hope of becoming the first female elected president and shattered her heart.
Now, when "Veep" season 6 returns on air, fans of the satirical comedy would see Selina (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) trying to adjust to civilian life.
Showrunner David Mandel recently granted an interview with A.V. Club where he admitted that there wasn't any intention of letting Selina win in the first place.
"My first instinct was she cannot be president of the United States," he said. "She needs to lose because it's the thing she wants most on the planet Earth."
Selina was president for some time, but it was more of a "caretaker presidency" and not full-term, as she would have wanted. Moreover, she holds the reputation for being the most ineffective leader of America. In fact, there are speculations that as she adjusts to being a civilian again, Selina won't even enjoy the privileges that are normally granted to former heads of state.
As for Selina's staffers, it seems they would be moving on with their lives now that they will no longer be working for her. Mandel said, "There will be different reincarnations of things, but it just will be different when we come back."
Meanwhile, Deadline has noted that the fortuitous scheduling for some HBO shows this year seemed to work in their favor as far as the Emmys go. "Game of Thrones," "Veep," and "Silicon Valley" aired their season finales on June 26, a day before the voting period for the Emmys ended.
That could explain why the number of nominations for all shows skyrocketed. "Veep," for instance, went from 9 nominations last year to 17 this year, which includes nominations for lead actress in a comedy for Louis-Dreyfus and a writing and directing nomination for Mandel.
"Veep"season 6 returns on HBO sometime in 2017.
