Walking Dead Spoilers, Plot Recap: Gabriel Betrays Rick's Group as Noah and Aiden Meet Horrific Deaths
In Episode 14 of "The Walking Dead" Season 5 on Sunday at AMC, Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam) committed a major betrayal of Rick and his group while Noah (Tyler James Williams) and Aiden (Daniel Bonjour) both suffered grisly deaths when they were eaten alive by walkers.
Titled "Spend," the episode started on a positive vibe as Noah confided his ambition to become an architect and builder in his newfound Alexandria community to Reg, Deanna's husband. Gabriel also took charge of the church and was welcomed with strawberries.
But things deteriorated quickly as Gabriel started ripping out pages from a Bible while Eugene (Josh McDermitt), Tara (Alanna Masterson), Glenn (Steven Yeun), Aiden and Nicholas (Michael Traynor) departed on a supply run to get vital parts of the community's busted electric grid inside a warehouse teeming with walkers both inside and outside.
Aiden was injured when a grenade carried by one of the soldiers turned zombies exploded after he repeatedly fired on the walker wearing military bulletproof armor. He was impaled on a wall as a result of the blast and was eventually consumed by the walkers.
Eugene became an unlikely hero as he saved Tara from the walkers then came back to try and save the others. Nicholas fled the scene and exposed Noah and Glenn to walkers. The walkers managed to grab hold of Noah's legs before eating him alive. Glenn could only watch in horror as he was unable to help. Upon reaching their van with the others, an angry Glenn beat up Nicholas, blaming him for Noah's death.
Meanwhile, Abraham (Michael Cudlitz), who was assigned to join a work crew outside the wall, saved a female member of the crew whom her co-workers were planning to leave behind when they were attacked by walkers. Abraham killed a number of walkers almost single-handedly, earning him praise and a recommendation for him to be put in charge of the community's work crew.
Back at the safe zone, Father Gabriel met Deanna (Tovah Feldshuh) and informed her that she made a mistake by letting in Rick and his gang. Deanna took this to mean that the gang managed to survive and therefore was an asset. However Gabriel warned her that "the day will come when they put their own lives before yours and everyone else's, and they will destroy everything you have here."
Meanwhile, Rick (Andrew Lincoln) discovered that Pete (Corey Brill) was a drunk while his son Sam ((Major Dodson) turned up to wrangle cookies from Carol (Melissa McBride). She then told Sam that he had to steal chocolate if he wanted her to bake cookies. Sam surprised Carol when he asked her for a gun, leaving Carol when she asked him who needed the gun. This led Carol to discover that Pete was physically abusing his wife. The episode ended with Carol warning Rick that he will eventually have to kill Pete.
