'Wayward Pines' season 3 release date, season 2 finale recap 2016: Executive producer talks about finale; Will series see third installment?

"Wayward Pines" season 2 just concluded its run, and with loose ends left hanging after the finale, fans are hoping there will be a third season to tie up those unsolved mysteries.

With First Generation leader Jason (Tom Stevens) dead, it was up to Theo Yadlin (Jason Patric) and CJ (Djimon Hounsou) to decide who among the human residents of Wayward Pines get to secure themselves in the sleeping pods. It was tough decision to make, something that would surely impact everyone living in the idyllic town, minus the Abbies, of course.

There wasn't even a showdown between the attacking Abbies and humans. Instead, the "chosen" humans locked themselves in the pod chamber, to sleep until they can wake up to a Wayward Pines that's free from Abbies. Nevertheless, something noteworthy gave way to the finale's biggest scene.

As the humans sleep, the current town of Wayward Pines is seen slowly deteriorating, with the Abbies outside the wall thriving. However, the final shot of an Abby holding a baby lends for an interesting discussion, which Blake Crouch, executive producer and author of the book series on which the show is based, gladly explained.

"Wayward Pines is very focused on the idea of human evolution and humans evolved into Abbies, but that does not have to be a static thing. It's continuing ... and [the scene] suggests that the Abbies are changing also. The Abbies will evolve into something else," he told Entertainment Weekly. "... We wanted to just drop the notion that perhaps when these residents of Wayward Pines emerge from the pods, they're going to find a very different world than the ones they left behind."

Would fans see the sleeping residents wake up to a very different world in season 3? Show creator M. Night Shyamalan would like to believe so.

"I think we can say it's a three-season story," Movie News Guide quoted Shyamalan as saying. "If we get the opportunity to tell the third and final season, we can finish the story."

Nevertheless, Carter Matt noted that "Wayward Pines" season 2's finale garnered a dismal rating of 0.7 from the 18-49 demographic or over 2 million viewers. Apparently, that was the series' lowest numbers since it debuted. A possible third season would greatly hinge on those numbers, so it remains to be seen if Fox would give "Wayward Pines" season 3 the green light.

If renewed, fans can expect all-new episodes for "Wayward Pines" season 3 returning in May 2017 on Fox. In the meantime, keep coming back for more updates on the show.
