'Wayward Pines' season 3 renewal news 2016: Storyline already in place, season 2 ratings might hinder renewal?

After the shocking conclusion of the second season of "Wayward Pines," season 3 is now the subject of many conversations with regards to the hit series.

There has not been any confirmation from FOX or any other individual involved in the show about a renewal, but there are already talks going on about what "Wayward Pines" season 3 would look like.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, author Blake Crouch, the man behind the novels that gave birth to the series, admitted that a second season for "Wayward Pines" was already a shock.

"If we're lucky enough to have a third season, I think it's possible for characters to return and to have new ones as well," the novelist said.

He added that "Wayward Pines" season 3 could explore the last hours of mankind before extinction and what these final moments look like and how they will deal with it as they watch and await their inevitable doom.

"Mankind would be the first self-aware species to go extinct. The last saber-tooth tiger didn't know it was the last saber-tooth tiger, but the idea that man knows he is in the sunset of his species is fascinating material to play in," Crouch explained.

"And I think in a way, we push through season 2 to get to have that discussion in a potential season 3," he continued.

Executive producer M. Night Shyamalan hinted earlier this year told EW earlier this year that after long discussions about the ending of "Wayward Pines," they figured 30 episodes will do it.

That means that "Wayward Pines" season 3 might still be on the cards. Interestingly in the same interview, he said that a new season won't likely happen since in season 2, they are "exactly where we wanted to be."

At the moment, "Wayward Pines" season 3 is not set in stone yet. Bustle says that a hurdle from this coming to fruition is the ratings of the second season, which did not live up to the success of the first.

However, the site believes that if Shyamalan would want to do another one in order to wrap up the story in 30 episodes like he and Crouch previously planned, FOX might make "Wayward Pines" season 3 happen.
