Winds of Winter Release Date News: 'Game of Thrones' Author George R.R. Martin To Skip Comic-Con to Work on Book
George R.R. Martin has a lot more important things to do than attend the Comic-Con fan convention in San Diego, California, this year.
In a blog he posted on Monday, the "Game of Thrones" author revealed that he will also be skipping the World Fantasy Convention in Saratoga to write the next book in his hit series, "The Winds of Winter."
"I have too much to do. Too many things on my plate. Son of Kong foremost amongst them," Martin wrote, referring to the sixth book in his novel series, "A Song of Fire and Ice."
"Should I complete and deliver Winds of Winter before these cons roll round, I reserve the right to change my mind," he added, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Since 2010, Martin has appeared at Comic-Con annually. In 2014, he announced he would trim his public appearances so he could focus more on writing.
Typically, he has participated—either as a moderator or guest—in the HBO show's Comic-Con panel while his publisher Random House typically has a party at the event, with Martin as the guest of honor.
The 45-year-old Comic-Con is the biggest date on the popular culture calendar, attended by major TV and film studios, actors and more than 130,000 fans.
Martin previously opted out of writing an episode of Thrones for season 5, which premieres April 12.
And since HBO's TV adaptation of "Game of Thrones," which is based on his unfinished series of novels, is already starting to overtake the novels, fans are worried that the story won't reach an ending.
But both HBO and the publishing house Harper Collins would be pressuring Martin to deliver the next book so as not to significantly hamper the television series.
After the first book, "Game of Thrones," was published in 1996, four other books in the series followed: "A Clash of Kings," "A Storm of Swords," "A Feast for Crows" and "A Dance with Dragons."
The sixth title, "The Winds of Winter," will most likely be published in 2016, while the seventh book is expected to be titled "A Dream of Spring" based on reports.
