More details on the "Warcraft" movie cast and character roles were revealed recently in Blizzcon.

Produced by Blizzard together with Legendary Pictures, the movie is based on the hit video game series of the same name. It started filming in January this year and finished in May. It is due for release in 2016.

Fighting on the side of the Alliance and primary protagonist is Travis Fimmel, who plays the role of Lothar. He is a war hero known as the lion of Azeroth and previously was the Knight-Commander of Stormwind.

In the games he sacrifices almost everything he has to save Azeroth. Fimmel is mostly know for his work in the series "Vikings" where he achieved much recognition for playing Ragnar Lothbrok.

Playing the role of King of Stormwind Llane Wrynn, is actor Dominic Cooper who has previously appeared in "Captain America" and "Need for Speed." He is head of the Alliance city Stormwind which in the games was ultimately sacked by the Orcs. Playing the role of his wife, Taria Wrynn, is Ruth Negga. While there is no one with this name in the Warcraft games, it seems in the film she is a "great love of the king and his trusted counsel."

Paula Patton plays the role of Garona, a half-Orc who comes through the portal to Azeroth where she meets up with Medivh. It was revealed in Blizzcon that her loyalties would be tested; it is not clear whether she will fight for the humans or the orcs. However in the games, she reveals Medivh's plan to open the portal and let the full force of Orcs through to King Llane and Anduin Lothar. Since then she has fought for the humans.

Ben Foster plays Medivh who ultimately becomes responsible for letting the Orc Horde into Azeroth, although it is his responsibility to protect it from incursions by the Orcs. In the game he is possessed by Sargeras which influences him to betray Azeroth.
