Xbox Games with Gold January 2017 free games: 'Deathtrap: World of Van Helsing,' 'The Cave' now ready for free download; more to come

The first set of the Xbox Games with Gold free games for January 2017 should be available for download now for both Xbox One and Xbox 360 players.

Members of the program rocking the current-generation console can now download for free "Deathtrap: World of Van Helsing" by NeocoreGames.

In this game, Xbox Games with Gold members should save Borgovia from "the horrors of the void" that break through from the walls that separate them from the world, now ready to wreak havoc.

For the Xbox 360 patrons, they first get the puzzle-platform and adventure video game, "The Cave," in which players can guide three characters to the mysterious titular location to learn its secrets as they work to keep their own.

This Xbox Games with Gold January 2017 freebie was actually inspired by the 1987 LucasArts video game masterpiece, "Maniac Mansion."

Interestingly, the remastered version of "Day of the Tentacle," the sequel to the classic adventure game, was given away by Sony as a PlayStation Plus freebie for PlayStation 4 players.

Both Xbox Games with Gold January 2017 free games are now available for free download — the Xbox One game for the whole month while the Xbox 360 title during the first half. Thanks to Xbox One Backward Compatibility, "The Cave" can be downloaded on the Xbox One as well.

For the latter half of the month up to Feb. 15, players of the current-generation console will get for free "Killer Instinct Season 2," which includes an additional set of characters, costumes and accessories for the ultimate one-on-one combat.

From Jan. 16 to 31, Xbox 360 players with an Xbox Games with Gold account, on the other hand, should be able to grab the well-loved 2D side-scrolling, platforming adventure "Rayman Origins," in which players are tasked to save Glade of Dreams from the "nefurrious" Darktoons.
