'Young Han Solo' release date, news: Movie will be a Western-type film

Still of Harrison Ford as Han Solo in "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope" | Lucasfilm

December is looking to be "Star Wars" month over the coming years as Lucasfilm will be releasing "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" this year and "Star Wars Episode VIII" in the next. More details have come up for another "Star Wars" spin-off, the yet to be titled "Young Han Solo" movie. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy tells fans what to expect from the movie and the visual inspirations that the production will draw from.

In an interview with Variety, Kennedy says that the "Han Solo" film will be "closer to a heist or Western type feel." She also goes on to talk about some of the inspiration that the movie will draw from. She says, "We've talked about [Frederic] Remington and those primary colors that are used in his paintings defining the look and feel of the film."

Remington was an artist whose work focused mainly on his depiction of the Old American West, and a lot of his paintings and sculptures have cowboys on horses riding along yellow deserts. If the "Han Solo" movie were to draw some inspiration from it, fans can see that it could look close to another sci-fi cult classic, "Firefly."

The movie will be directed by "21 Jumpstreet" helmers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, and it will star Alden Ehrenreich ("Hail, Caesar!") as the new Han Solo. Donald Glover ("Atlanta" and "Community") has also been cast in the movie as a young Lando Calrissian.

Just recently, "Game of Thrones" star Emilia Clarke has also been reported to join the cast of the movie. Details of her role have yet to be specified, but it's said that her character will help "round out" a full cast of characters that Han and Chewie will meet in their adventures across the galaxy.

The movie is still in its very early stages of pre-production but fans can expect the "Young Han Solo" film to hit theaters in 2018.
