'Avatar 2' news, release date: James Cameron going for glasses-free 3D; Could this delay the film?

Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) from the 2009 record-breaking sci-fi movie, "Avatar" | 20th Century Fox

"Avatar 2" director James Cameron has revealed another grand ambition for and the rest of the films—higher frame rates and glass-free 3D.

Notorious for pushing the envelope in technological innovations when making his films, Cameron made known his plans while he accepted his honorary award for Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers.

"I'm going to push. Not only for better tools, workflow, high dynamic range (HDR) and high frame rates (HFR)—the things we are working toward," Cameron said as quoted by Independent.

"I'm still very bullish on 3D, but we need brighter projection, and ultimately I think it can happen—with no glasses. We'll get there," he added.

If Cameron could pull off cinematic 3D with "Avatar 2," he will practically be pioneering the technology on the filmmaking scale, as such novelty will only be experienced for now in the Nintendo DS, as per Independent.

With regards to the higher frame rates, this is not entirely unprecedented as it is something that filmmakers like Douglas Trumbull already tried, as per IndieWire.

It appears that Cameron is pushing for this innovation as early as "Avatar 2," which is currently slated to release in Christmas 2018.

The filmmaker has said before that he will be willing to delay the movie even further than it already is it is if it would mean the film will be much better.

"Avatar 2" will be the first of the four sequels that Cameron is simultaneously working on. That in itself is already a huge task, but the director has extraordinary visions for the franchise.

"Avatar 2" will be a family saga as it will focus on Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) start a family and the dangers of doing so in Pandora.

Stephen Lang will be back as villain Colonel Miles Quaritch despite his fate in the first film. Helping him wreak havoc the land is Sigourney Weaver, who will also be back.
