'Beetlejuice 2' release date news: Tim Burton, Michael Keaton & Winona Ryder on board, premiere date unclear

Tim Burton's '80s cult classic "Beetlejuice" has been confirmed to be in the works, and fans can't wait to see their favorite comedy-horror film back on the movie screen.

During a visit to Late Night With Seth Meyers last year, actress Winona Ryder confirmed that the film will indeed have a sequel. "I think I can confirm it," she said. "It was very hush-hush top secret ... but then (Tim Burton) was doing some press for 'Big Eyes' and he did an on-camera interview and he said, 'Oh yeah, we're doing it, and Winona's going to be in it.' ... If he said it, I can say it."

Fast forward to 2016, a premiere date remains unclear specially since Tim Burton's hands are now full with his most recent project "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children." The award-winning director already expressed his interest in doing a sequel two years ago, but he made it clear that Michael Keaton has to be there too. "There's only one Beetlejuice, and that's Michael. There is a script, and I would love to work with him again. I think there is now a better chance than ever... I miss that character. There's something that's cathartic and amazing about it. I think it's closer than ever," Burton previously told IGN. Keaton responded positively, saying that he'd do "Beetlejuice 2" if he was given a chance to redo something.

Writer Seth Grahame-Smith gave an update to Entertainment Weekly and said that Michael Keaton is already on board for the sequel. "I've emailed with Michael Keaton. I know he's excited about the idea. I know Tim is excited about the idea. Where it stands now is Tim's got to get ready to make ['Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children'], and then hopefully we are set, deals are done, and we're waiting in the wings ready to go right after 'Peregrine's' wraps up. The ideal timeline is we're really getting into it toward the end of this year," he said.

As of now, a release date for "Beetlejuice 2" has yet to be announced.
