'Cardcaptor Sakura' latest news: Creators confirm 'Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Arc' anime sequel in 2018

The 90s classic anime series "Cardcaptor Sakura" will be making a comeback in the near future.

As announced in the show's official Twitter account, manga artist group Clamp confirmed that there will be a new "Cardcaptor Sakura" anime series in 2018.

According to The Bitbag, the much-anticipated anime series, which is set to premiere in January 2018, will be based on the sequel of "Cardcaptor Sakura" written by Clamp which is titled "Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Arc." The 2018 anime series will be produced by Madhouse, the same group that produced the previous 70-episode anime adaptation of the original manga.

Japan broadcasting channel NHK will be airing the upcoming "Cardcaptor" anime series in 2018. Mario Asaka, the director of the original anime show, will also be directing the "Clear Card Arc" sequel.

As reported by Anime News Network, the sequel anime series will feature the return of the original cast such as Sakura Tange (Sakura Kinomoto), Aya Hisakawa (Keroberos), Junko Iwao (Tomoyo Daidōji), Motoko Kumai (Syaoran Li), Medumi Ogata (Yukito Tsukishiro), and Tomokazu Seki (Toya Kinomoto).

2016 marks the 20th anniversary of the original "Cardcaptor Sakura" manga. In celebration of this year, CLAMP released the sequel manga series "Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Arc," which began serialization in the July 2016 issue of Nakayoshi.

The sequel manga kicks off at the point where the first series ended when Sakura enters junior high school. After dreaming about a mysteriously cloaked figure, all of Sakura's cards had gone blank and were all rendered powerless. Hence, she goes on a quest to uncover what really happened.

It can be recalled that the original "Cardcaptor Sakura" manga series was published in Nakayoshi from May 1996 until June 2000 and was also published by Kodansha in 12 volumes from November 1996 to July 2000. The manga series was a massive success, which sold over 12 million copies. The manga was also released in English-translated versions.
