'Criminal Minds' season 12 cast news, updates: Paget Brewster makes a return

"Criminal Minds" will have former cast member Paget Brewster returning to reprise her role as SSA Emily Prentiss.

According to Deadline, Brewster will be returning for multiple episodes. Her arc will have her character returning after the escape of 13 serial killers, and the BAU needing Prentiss' help with the case.

Showrunner Erica Messer shared her excitement with having Brewster back on board for "Criminal Minds" season 12. "The BAU can use more help this year since they've got a lot of known and unknown subjects to catch," said Messer.

Apparently, Brewster was able to find herself back on the show after her schedule was freed up when her FOX comedy series "Grandfathered" ended.

Brewster was a series regular for "Criminal Minds" for six seasons until she quit during the following season to pursue a career in comedy; shooting multiple pilots for potential series. She did, however, return for the 200th episode of "Criminal Minds" during the eight season, and she also returned for one episode for the eleventh season last year.

Coincidentally, Brewster showed up after the departure of another series regular, Shemar Moore (who will be replaced by Adam Rodriguez in season 12).

Brewster recently shared a tweet of Prentiss' ID and some boots to confirm that she is in fact shooting some episodes for "Criminal Minds." According to the post, Brewster was having a hard time not sharing her appearance for the next season. Hopefully fans will be glad to see a familiar face returning to the BAU, even if it is just for a couple of episodes.

The twelfth season premieres on CBS Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 9 p.m.
