'Criminal Minds' Season 12 spoilers and updates: New BAU agent to replace Derek Morgan, EP still choosing the 12 unsubs they will bring back

CBS

Top-rating police procedural series "Criminal Minds" ended its 11th season with one less member of the BAU team, but season 12 might bring in a new face to fill the void left by Derek Morgan (Shemar Moore).

Executive producer Erica Messer confirmed that they are currently talking about a possible replacement for Derek. "We'll probably be having discussions in June about what we're doing," she told TV Guide. "We don't want a shrinking cast. We want to have people in the field. Given that we have to go out and catch unsubs of the week and these serial killers out there, it feels like we can't be an agent down this year. We have to be full-steam ahead. I just don't know who that is or what it might be yet." Moore's final episode in March drew a whopping 10.9 million total viewers—the largest it got since November 2014.

Season 11 ended with a major cliffhanger as the team's seemingly innocent dinner at Rossi's (Joe Mantegna) place got cut after they learned that three more prison breaks happened. Peter Lewis, along with 12 other serial killers, managed to escape and it is up to the team to catch them before they cause any more trouble. This gave viewers an idea of how season 12 will play out, as it was made clear that the team will hunt down several perpetrators.

Casting for the 12 other unsubs feels like an exciting opportunity for Messer, as she thinks of it as a trip down to memory lane. However, the showrunner still does not have a complete list of whom will they bring back. "We have so many to choose from. A lot of it is availability," she said. "Right now, no actor's agent is going to commit to them being available for us. We do know that we want Mr. Scratch to be part of Season 12 in some capacity, or at least the idea of Mr. Scratch being out there. Everything else will be the fun of getting the writers together and to say, 'If we could bring back anyone in the last 11 years, who would you want it to be?'"

As of this writing, the network has yet to announce an official premiere date for "Criminal Minds" season 12.
