Instead of celebrating his birthday, David Rossi (Joe Mantegna) will have his hands full when "Criminal Minds" returns for the second half of season 12 in early January.

According to the synopsis for the episode titled "Profiling 202," Rossi will be holding a profiling course during his birthday. But aside from spending time in class, Rossi's day will become more complicated when he gets a call from his greatest enemy Tommy Yates (Adam Nelson) to reveal where the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) can find the body of his latest victim.

Yates is known as one of the most prolific serial killers in the series, having reportedly killed as many as 101 victims in the West Coast over the course of 17 years. But Rossi and the BAU must find out how Yates can still commit more crimes even though he is already behind bars.

SpoilerTV posted the synopsis for the upcoming "Criminal Minds" season 12 episode, which reads:

"As Rossi conducts a profiling course on his birthday, he receives a call from his serial killer nemesis, Tommy Yates, telling him the location of his latest victim."

The midseason premiere of "Criminal Minds" season 12 will be aired on Wednesday, Jan. 4.

Meanwhile, reports claim that the series is in danger of cancellation due to a drastic drop in the show's ratings for season 12. Some reports blame the decrease in the show's viewership after Thomas Gibson was fired from portraying the role of Agent Aaron Hotchner in the series when he was involved in a physical altercation with one of the show's producers.

Some fans of the series threatened to boycott the show if they will not bring Gibson back to the series. Yet the producers seemed to be determined to keep the actor out due to his violation.

CBS has yet to decide the fate of "Criminal Minds" after the current season.
