Marvel Studios has yet to confirm its plans for Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but if the box office performance of "Doctor Strange" is any indication, its sequel is highly likely to be included in the lineup. The Benedict Cumberbatch starrer not only was a blockbuster hit, earning $654 million worldwide, it was also lauded by critics and moviegoers alike. Recently, one of the movie's screenwriters, Jon Spaihts, revealed a particular character who could be introduced in "Doctor Strange 2."

Before "Doctor Strange" made its way to theaters, there were rumors that the titular protagonist's protégé and lover in the comic book series, Clea, would be featured in the film. While Spaihts confirmed that they did consider including her; ultimately, the sorceress was nowhere to be seen. Instead, Rachel McAdams' Christine Palmer served as Cumberbatch's love interest.

"[Clea's] a tricky character to interpret because her uncle is a kind of fire-headed omnipotent god and she's kind of a hot babe who studies magic. That's a tricky relationship to bring out of a comic book and on to a movie screen," the writer admitted to CBR.

Nevertheless, Spaihts is optimistic about Clea eventually being introduced in future "Doctor Strange" movies because she will be able to add so much depth and complexity to the narrative.

"She's a really compelling character as a foil, a love interest, a colleague of Doctor Strange's, and she always carries with her that width of mystery as to whether she is human, and how human, and what that means for his relationship to her. So we might find a way to introduce her to the story," he added.

Aside from mentioning Clea, Spaihts also had other ideas for the sequel including the introduction of the villain Nightmare, a zombie apocalypse scenario featuring Shuma-Gorath, and the return of Karl Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor).

If "Doctor Strange 2" is indeed part of Phase Four of the MCU, then the sequel could premiere in 2020 at the earliest. In the meantime, the Sorcerer Supreme is expected to make an appearance in three upcoming MCU films: "Spider-Man: Homecoming" on July 7, 2017, "Thor: Ragnarok" on Nov. 3, 2017, and "Avengers: Infinity War" on May 8, 2018.
