When "Gotham" returns for its third season later this year, it will reflect the U.S. political climate, which will be at the peak of election frenzy at that time.

Several cast members of the Fox crime series were at the 56th annual Festival de Television of Monte Carlo this weekend. During the event, "Gotham" actor Cory Michael Smith, who plays Edward Nygma, spoke to Cinefilos.it about the upcoming "Gotham" season 3.

"'Gotham,' like many superhero stories, is a parallel of today's society, of what happens every day," the actor told the outlet, as translated by ComicBook.com. "And in the third season, in the fall, when the United States will stand preparing to face one of the most important presidential elections in their history, even 'Gotham' will address in parallel the issue."

The United States presidential election of 2016 is scheduled for Nov. 8. Hillary Clinton is the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee while Donald Trump is the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

Meanwhile, it appears that "Gotham" season 3 will be featuring a new face in the role of an existing character.

According to TVLine, when the Fox series returns in the fall, the role of Poison Ivy/Ivy Pepper will no longer be filled by actress Clare Foley. Because the young orphan will have transformed into the villain Poison Ivy in season 3, Foley will not be returning and, in her place, the show's producers are currently looking for a new actress to take on the role.

Casting is reportedly underway for "an actress in her late teens" to step into the role of the villain. TVLine also noted that the now-regular character will be playing a bigger role in "Gotham."

"Gotham" is also casting several other actors to assume the roles of new characters in the third season of the Fox series.

"Gotham" season 3 will air Mondays this fall on Fox.
