After the release of "Iron Man 3" back in 2013, many fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) have hoped for the possibility of another "Iron Man" film. However, as years have gone by, most now fear that "Iron Man 4," starring Robert Downey Jr. in the titular role, would never see the light of day.

If the recent and varied reports are to be believed, it may take some time before a fourth "Iron Man" film hits the big screen, if at all.

As reported by Mobile & Apps, there are rumors which suggest that RDJ could appear in a still-untitled Marvel film, which will reportedly premiere sometime in 2020. Some have said that "Iron Man 4" could be one of the MCU films that will be included after Phase 3 of the MCU movies, along with a sequel to "Spider-Man: Homecoming" which is slated for a 2019 release.

There are also reports which suggest that the actor. would not be able to reprise his role in "Iron Man 4" because he is expected to die in "Avengers: Infinity War."

In an earlier report from Movie Pilot, it was mentioned that given Marvel's objective of introducing new superhero characters in their cinematic universe, it is only logical that they let go some of their older characters. Considering the critical and audience reception of the previous "Iron Man" films and Downey Jr.'s hefty paycheck, the MCU may move forward with another comic character replacing Tony Stark.

In the Marvel comics, Riri Williams has been introduced as Iron Man's new protégé with the superhero name "Iron Heart." With a suitable candidate to pass the torch to and continue his legacy, Tony Stark, as portrayed by Downey Jr., may continue to appear in other MCU films but would no longer have another standalone film.

As all these are still purely speculative, it is best to take them with a grain of salt. So far, what is certain is Downey Jr.'s appearance in the upcoming Marvel film "Spider-Man: Homecoming," which is scheduled to hit theaters on July 7.
