'Iron Man 4' news 2016: Is the movie happening? What's in store for Tony Stark's future?

Although fans are pretty sure that Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role of billionaire philanthropist Tony Stark in "Avengers: Infinity War Part One" and "Avengers: Infinity War Part Two," more have been asking whether they will get to see another solo "Iron Man" film in the future.

GameNGuide reports that "Iron Man 4" is not happening, and that Downey will not have any more roles as Tony Stark. Alhough Downey himself confirmed that "Iron Man 4" was definitely happening back in 2014, during a guest appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," now it seems that there has been a change of heart. Even during a press conference when the actor was promoting "Captain America: Civil War," he said that he felt like he "can do one more" when asked about a fourth "Iron Man" film.

Fans have been speculating a lot about the film, seeing that the "Iron Man" title is one of the most popular and that it was the title that launched the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the current schedule of movies that Marvel has lined up, fans have put a possible release date for "Iron Man 4" in 2020. That's tough, though, considering that Downey is already in his 50s, and he may not have the energy to pull off another action-heavy "Iron Man" movie.

With that in mind, fans have been speculating that "Iron Man 4" could be a prequel, with a younger actor to fill in the role for Downey. However, if that was the case, it seems a far stretch to put "Iron Man" in the title, since the very origin of Iron Man had Downey in it from the very start. Also, some fans would rather not see another "Iron Man" film at all than see Robert Downey Jr. replaced.

The next time that fans can catch Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark will be in "Spider-Man: Homecoming," set to come out in July 2017, but it's doubtful if he would be wearing the iconic suit. Fans will just have to make do with what they get.
