'Longmire' season 5 air date, spoilers: Walt faces betrayal, shows concern for Vic's dating life
Times will be tough for Wyoming county sheriff Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor) when "Longmire" returns for its fifth season.
AV Club reports that the next season of the neo-western crime series is riddled with shootouts, road rage, angry confrontations and a seemingly dramatic plunge into the lake. On the flipside, it also promises to offer a subtle romantic build-up between Walt and his deputy, Victoria "Vic" Moretti (Katee Sackhoff).
This is about as far as viewers can speculate based on the official "Longmire" season 5 trailer that Netflix recently released. The trailer also shows that although Walt survives the shooting incident that ended the previous season, he seems to have lost his memory and sense of self as a result.
The dutiful sheriff is acting uncharacteristically disoriented and his deputies will not fail to take notice. Jim "The Ferg" Ferguson (Adam Bartley), the young deputy whose efficiency in his job has won Walt's respect, tells his fellow deputy Vic of his concerns about their boss. He describes Walt's behavior as "a little off."
Indeed, Walt has a lot to think about in "Longmire" season 5. Perhaps of most concern to him is finding out that his daughter, Cady Longmire (Cassidy Freeman) is now working for Jacob Nighthorse (A Martinez), the local businessman whom he once suspected to be involved in his wife's murder. It seems that Cady has accepted the job Nighthorse has offered her in the season 4 finale to provide legal representation for the Cheyenne natives.
But this will not be the only betrayal that breaks Walt's heart. It's no secret that his closest friend and most trusted ally, Henry Standing Bear (Lou Diamond Phillips) has not been completely honest with him regarding a lot of things. And when Walt finally pulls the lid on all of Henry's lies, a heated and heartbreaking confrontation is sure to follow.
But while Walt and Henry's friendship is in danger of crumbling apart, the much anticipated romance between Walt and Vic seems to finally be coming into fruition. Vic shows concern for Walt's well-being, while Walt shows concern over Vic and deputy Eamon O'Neill (Josh Cooke) presumably dating. "We're not," Vic insists in the trailer.
Fans of the show and its source material, Craig Johnson's "Walt Longmire Mysteries" series, know that in the book, Walt and Vic are romantically involved. And if the loving stare they are giving each other near the end of the "Longmire" season 5 trailer is anything to go by, it seems like the Walt-Vic romance is finally going to find its way into the small screen adaptation.
All episodes of "Longmire" season 5 will stream on Netflix on Friday, Sept. 23.
Meanwhile, the "Longmire" season 4 DVD goes on sale on Tuesday, Sept. 13. TV Series Finale is offering viewers in the U.S. a chance to win one of three copies. More details can be found on their page.
