'Metal Gear Survive' release date update: Characters to be sucked into wormholes? Hideo Kojima distances himself from spin-off?

During the recent Tokyo Game Show 2016, the gameplay for "Metal Gear Survive" was teased, and according to reports, it looks like the game will be one exciting journey for players.

An official trailer was released for the game last Sept. 17, and game developer Konami revealed that the spin-off game that features zombies will get an all-new perspective in the upcoming titles. The four-player co-op will see players' favorite characters apparently getting sucked into wormholes and brought to a distorted terrain where biologically-mutated creatures abound.

The gameplay will have players coordinating with one another and trying to survive the hostile environment if they want to make it out alive.

The Tech 52 reports that "Metal Gear Survive" will be set in an alternate timeline that continues the narrative of the original series. Nevertheless, Hideo Kojima, who created "Metal Gear Solid," made it clear that he is not, in any way, part of "Metal Gear Survive's" development.

In fact, IGN reports that when asked about the zombie spin-off, the video game developer emphatically said, "That's nothing to do with me!" He added that the latest offering from Konami doesn't fit the mold of "Metal Gear Solid" as far as plot and genre go.

"The Metal Gear games are about political fiction and espionage," he continued. "Where do zombies fit in with that?"

The former character and mechanical designer of the "Metal Gear" series, Yoji Shinkawa, joined Kojima in the interview and said, "If I had worked on that game, it would have mechs in it," thereby denying his involvement with "Metal Gear Survive," too.

Some fans who saw the trailer for the game claim the gameplay is quite identical to "Metal Solid Gear." Even Polygon confirmed the similarities.

"Fans of the series who played 'Metal Gear Solid 5' and its 'Metal Gear Online' component will recognize many of the returning gameplay elements in 'Metal Gear Survive'. Players can still Fulton enemies and items, exclusively using wormholes, and develop new weapons," the report said. "This time, however, players will need to gather resources themselves and build objects like barricades, fences and mounted machine guns at a crafting table."

"Metal Gear Survive" is set to release on Xbox One, PS4 and the PC in 2017, purportedly for $30.
