New character combinations are in store for fans in the upcoming episodes of ABC's hit comedy "Modern Family" season 8.

Wednesday's premiere saw each of the family units head out to three separate trips. Jay (Ed O'Neil) and Gloria's (Sofia Vergara) clan went to a wedding in Mexico, Phil (Ty Burell) and Claire's (Julie Bowen) to New York City, while Mitch (Jesse Tyler-Ferguson) and Cam's (Eric Stonestreet) went to Missouri. All the trips went from good to disastrous, but everyone still made it home on time to gather at the Delgado-Pritchett household to celebrate Father's Day. The episode also marked the end of Gloria's hot sauce business and the death of Cam's grandmother.

With the program now in its eighth year, creators keep everything fresh by putting the ensemble cast in various groupings every episode. "We're doing some groupings we haven't done a whole lot of -- I have an episode coming up where Gloria and Phil are taking Manny (Rico Rodriguez) and Luke (Nolan Gould) on a college tour to go check out a school," Burell told TV Guide.

Meanwhile, the original modern family will be having a mini-reunion in an upcoming episode as Jay, Mitch and Claire attend a cousin's wedding. However, they will be surprised to see Didi (Shelley Long) in the event, leading the foursome to spend more time together.

"They grew up together, those two were kids in that household, and it gives us a chance to see what Jay and Didi were like together, and how Claire and Mitchell reacted to having those parents," executive producer Christopher Lloyd told Entertainment Weekly.

As for the Dunphy kids, Alex (Ariel Winter) will try to take a job as a barista, while Haley (Sarah Hyland) enters a relationship with a new character. Apart from preparing for college, Luke will also attempt to take a job Jay's country club.

"Modern Family" season 8 airs every Wednesday nights at 9 p.m. EST on ABC.
